We continued with the algebraic skills necessary for the National 4 – Expressions & Formula topic with work on multiplying out brackets and simplifying expressions. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Algebraic Manipulation – Single Brackets & Simplifying 1.

2B1 – week ending 23rd May
We had to re-schedule one of the periods we had intended to use for the presentations last week to this week, and after all the groups had given their presentations, they were provided with feedback on the content of their financial conclusions as well as their overall presentations. We then continued with more discussion regarding probability and betting. We then finished the Finance Project with an investigation into stocks and shares using the actual share prices from January onwards from the Press & Journal which was supplied by a pupil in the class.

1W2 – week ending 23rd May
This week the class continued the topic Statistics with the class learning more about probability before performing another investigation of how probability works. This then led onto calculating the mean, median, mode & range of a set of data.

3A6 – week ending 16th May
We continued work on substituting values into formulae and this can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Expressions & Formulae – Substitution 2. This led onto making your own formulae and then more work revising spotting a pattern and finding the formula for the nth term and then calculating a particular value in the sequence using the formula that they have worked out.

2B1 – week ending 16th May
Two periods this week would be devoted to giving the Finance Project presentations to Mrs Rennie and myself. The other lessons would be looking at probability and how this relates to Finance in betting and stocks & shares. This will carry on to next week as well. We have already discussed how bookmakers take 90% of the income and that the odds are always stacked against you. Hopefully by carrying out a series of practical experiments the class will develop their appreciation of the futility of this. There are a number of lessons on the MyMaths website on probability, these can be found under Library – Data – Probability.

1W2 – week ending 16th May
This week the class finished the topic Measurement in particular converting the units weights.
We then had one period of revision prior to the end of year test, with all the topics being tested. The topics are – Whole Numbers, Symmetry, Angles, Problem Solving, Decimals, Fractions & Percentages, Equations & Expressions, Perimeter, Area & Volume, Scale Drawing, 2D & 3D Shapes and related properties such as Nets, Surface Area, Time, Timetables & Temperature, Measurement as well as C0-ordinates.
Our final topic for the year was Statistics with the class carrying out a practical project on probability. There are a number of lessons on the MyMaths website on probability but the main one at the moment is to be found under Library – Data – Probability – Probability Intro.

3A6 – week ending 9th May
We spent one period looking at enlarging shapes using a scale factor to find a missing side which was a follow on from the work last week. We then went onto substituting values into formulae which has been done previously in S1, S2 & S3 as a bit of revision whilst pupils who were absent last week sat their S3 exams. 2B1 – week ending 9th May
We continued the Finance Project looking at the cost of a loan before planning/costing a holiday, buying a car and value for money (all of which has some bearing on the class project and the finances that each group is investigating). This led onto secured/unsecured loans.
The groups will be giving their presentations either on Monday or Tuesday of next week, and Mrs Rennie (their Year Head) is looking forward to sitting in on the presentations.
