1W2 – week ending 20th December

Last week the class sat a test on all the topics covered up to Friday 13th December. The topics in the test were Estimating & Rounding and Number Processes (add, subtract, multiply and divide) for Whole Numbers and Decimals, Symmetry, Angles, Problem Solving, Fractions & Percentages and Equations & Expressions. Depending upon the result, some pupils were given another test.

We then started with a bit of work preparing for the Café Project which will last most of next term. This will involve the pupils working in groups planning, designing, possibly creating a 3D model and presenting their ideas for the café to the rest of the class. Along the way we will be learning how mathematics plays an important part of this process, and the skills necessary for creating the design such as scale drawings & accurate measurements, perimeter, area (& volume), 2D & 3D shapes and how they can influence designs. In this way it is hoped that pupils will develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the practical applications of mathematics in real life. This week it involved finding out the definition of a rectangle and a square.

We went over the recent tests and pupils PLPs were discussed and issued.

We spent one period practicing plotting co-ordinates whilst creating festive pictures.
