Child Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I took time to talk about #secureyourfuture a really important event taking place at the school next week.\u00a0 Pupils were given an information sheet home but just in case it fails to make it out of the bag I attach an electronic copy here for you &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>A second big event happening next week is a visit by UNICEF UK assessors\u00a0to see if we meet the standard for level 1 of their Rights Respecting Schools\u00a0Award.\u00a0 We have been doing a lot of work to help recognise and realise children&#8217;s rights and it has\u00a0been a recurring theme in my blogs and newsletters.\u00a0 Early next week we will issue a newsletter about\u00a0the UN Convention on the rights of the Child (UNCRC) and Rights Respecting\u00a0Schools\u00a0but I attach a preview here for your reference &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>There has been a fair bit of research done around schools which promote rights and I attach a link to a recent article\u00a0which emphasise the impact it can have on both behaviour and attainment &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>I also attach a\u00a0poster which sets out the articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in child friendly language &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Child_friendly_CRC_summary_final.pdf\">Child_friendly_CRC_summary_final<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I would encourage all children and families to discuss rights issues at home and amongst each other.\u00a0 When we think of examples of violations\u00a0of children&#8217;s rights we\u00a0often think of children in conflict zones, refugees or children suffering from malnutrition\/disease.\u00a0 We also hear of issues such as forced marriage, genital mutilation, trafficking and exploitation &#8211; some of which\u00a0happens further afield but\u00a0which has\u00a0happened in Scotland.\u00a0 If we are to protect all children we need children\u00a0to know their rights\u00a0and\u00a0we need adults to respect these rights.\u00a0 Even closer to home\/school are issues such as bullying, humiliation, intimidation and disruption of learning.\u00a0 These are everyday examples\u00a0where some children are being denied their rights by other children.\u00a0 By promoting UNCRC and working towards level 1 and level 2 of the Rights Respecting Schools Award we\u00a0hope to help more youngsters to recognise and realise their rights.<\/p>\n<p>This week\u00a0also marked one year since the Global Goals were set.\u00a0 The global goals\u00a0set ambitious targets in respect of 17 areas.\u00a0 192 countries have signed up to\u00a0achieve these goals\u00a0by 2030.\u00a0\u00a0As we develop as a\u00a0Rights Respecting School I am keen that youngsters\u00a0campaign around these Global Goals.\u00a0\u00a0Youngsters in S1 will be in their\u00a0mid 20s in 2030\u00a0and as well as participating in improving their school and their local community I would like them to\u00a0have played an active part in creating a cleaner, safer,\u00a0fairer\u00a0and better educated world.\u00a0 For more information on the Global goals go to &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">http:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/The-Global-Goals.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1170\" src=\"http:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/The-Global-Goals.png\" alt=\"the-global-goals\" width=\"255\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I took time to talk about #secureyourfuture a really important event taking place at the school next week.\u00a0 Pupils were given an information sheet home but just in case it fails to make it out of the bag I attach an electronic copy here for you &#8211;
