{"id":2426,"date":"2018-03-25T10:37:31","date_gmt":"2018-03-25T10:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/?p=2426"},"modified":"2018-03-25T10:37:31","modified_gmt":"2018-03-25T10:37:31","slug":"5th-march-18th-march-gaining-our-gold-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.harlawacademy.org\/option1\/2018\/03\/25\/5th-march-18th-march-gaining-our-gold-award\/","title":{"rendered":"5th March &#8211; 18th March:  Gaining our Gold Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Apologies for combining two weekly blogs into one.\u00a0 Apologies too for this being a relatively short blog but one with a fairly significant attachment which I hope\u00a0you\u00a0will take time to read through.<\/p>\n<p>We have had confirmation from UNICEF UK that we have gained the Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award.\u00a0 Indeed we are only the second school in the UK to\u00a0be assessed against the new Gold criteria &#8211; the first being Ferryhill Primary around a month ago.\u00a0\u00a0We are therefore the first, and at present the only, secondary school in the UK to have been successfully assessed against the new criteria for the Gold Award.<\/p>\n<p>I have attached a copy of the report and I do hope you will take time to read through it.\u00a0\u00a0Over the\u00a0next year we will continue to take this work forward.\u00a0 It is vitally important as we all need to work hard to ensure children can benefit from their rights to; <strong>survival, protection, development <\/strong>and <strong>participation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We want our children to feel <strong>safe in school, safe at home<\/strong> and <strong>safe in their community<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0We want them to <strong>be the best they can be<\/strong> and to play a <strong>full and active part in their community<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Gaining the award will not make this happen.\u00a0 But the framework for the award helps us to focus on how children (<strong>rights holders<\/strong>) behave towards each other and how they are supported by adults (<strong>duty bearers<\/strong>).\u00a0 As a school community we need to use the award to do even more to help children to recognise where they are being <strong>denied their rights &#8211; often by other children<\/strong>.\u00a0 We need to use the award to further empower children to<strong>\u00a0act in ways which will improve their environment, their health, their learning and their safety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We want to continue to lead in this work as it is fundamental to<strong> improving our school<\/strong> and <strong>improving the life chances<\/strong> of the young people who attend Harlaw Academy.<\/p>\n<p>I want to thank everyone who worked on helping us gain the award and I look forward to working with everyone\u00a0as we take this work forward.\u00a0 Our new logo and our report are attached below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Harlaw-Ac-Aberdeen-Cty-Gold-MJMRe-Feb-18-MR.pdf\">Harlaw Ac Aberdeen Cty Gold MJMRe Feb 18 MR<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Gold-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2431\" src=\"https:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Gold-logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"146\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Apologies for combining two weekly blogs into one.\u00a0 Apologies too for this being a relatively short blog but one with a fairly significant attachment which I hope\u00a0you\u00a0will take time to read through.
