{"id":911,"date":"2016-02-13T17:48:54","date_gmt":"2016-02-13T17:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/?p=911"},"modified":"2016-02-13T17:48:54","modified_gmt":"2016-02-13T17:48:54","slug":"8th-12th-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.harlawacademy.org\/option1\/2016\/02\/13\/8th-12th-february\/","title":{"rendered":"8th &#8211; 12th February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/winning-scotland.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-912\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-912\" src=\"http:\/\/harlawacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/winning-scotland-320x133.jpg\" alt=\"winning scotland\" width=\"300\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year we had the\u00a0offer to work with the above\u00a0initiative which links\u00a0world class athletes to schools.\u00a0 The athletes\u00a0commit to 3 sessional in the schools to help groups of youngsters to set goals, learn to\u00a0cope with setbacks and hopefully meet personal targets.<\/p>\n<p>We met our athlete Fiona Duncan\u00a0to\u00a0make a plan for Harlaw.\u00a0 Fiona is a cyclist who took part in the Paralympics\u00a0in London 2012 and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014.\u00a0 She is the sighted member of the tandem team and has trained with UK cycling at the National Cycling centre in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTPb6g_z8TnRbtFXlpDhA-Bd6i7w-ayZQ6f-BJDMcrotrpXEZ7okg\" alt=\"Image result for fiona duncan cyclist\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQfuDk9VHeGrw4XAZF24yGFWKnhGiDlyiwnqTNtzLEG9Vtxoqkn\" alt=\"Image result for fiona duncan cyclist\" width=\"251\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We agreed to work with a group of around 24 pupils from S3-S5 &#8211; people we felt had potential and who with the right focus could not just achieve that potential but could perhaps go beyond what they even think is possible.\u00a0 Some of those we selected are good at sports and we think they could become great at sport.\u00a0 Some are not sporty but have shown us something to suggest they want to do better but need a bit of help to get to that next level.<\/p>\n<p>It can be so difficult to encourage young people to be winners &#8211; they can look and sound very confident but inside\u00a0many are filled with self doubt or are unable to make choices which\u00a0go against their peers.\u00a0 I hope that\u00a0the chance to work with\u00a0Fiona will help some of\u00a0our 24 pupils to; set ambitious targets,\u00a0work through setbacks and\u00a0experience\u00a0success in their personal journey.\u00a0 We are planning\u00a0a reception\u00a0in early June\u00a0at which the group will share their experiences and achievements with this particular project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year we had the\u00a0offer to work with the above\u00a0initiative which links\u00a0world class athletes to schools.\u00a0 The athletes\u00a0commit to 3 sessional in the schools to help groups of youngsters to set goals, learn to\u00a0cope with setbacks and hopefully meet personal targets.
