3A6 – week ending 10th January 2014

We continued the topic Statistics with more work on drawing Pie Charts. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Data – Presenting Data – Drawing Pie Charts.

We then started applying the statistics that the class have learnt to the data supplied and the project will be the basis of evidence of the coursework that they have achieved. The class were assigned certain aspects which needed to be completed at home.  Some have not been completing this work as requested. The project is based on many of the statistical calculations and processes that the class have carried out over the last few weeks, involving Stem & Leaf diagrams, calculating the Mean, finding the 5-Figure Summary and drawing Multiple Boxplots. Every pupil should have a detailed list of the processes that they will need to carry out and then prepare a conclusion based on these calculations. They have to produce a report which will be filed to show that they have achieved these elements of the course.

2B1 – week ending 10th January 2014

We started the topic Circles with a reminder that the class had already encountered it in S1 for the S1 project. We would be getting much more practice with Circumferences and Areas of Circles and also getting some more practice with rounding to significant figures. This is under Library – Number – Estimating and Accuracy – Significant Figures and the Circles work is Library – Shape – Area and Perimeter – Circumference of a Circle and Area of Circles especially finding the radius/diameter and the exam type questions.

1W2 – week ending 10th January 2014

We started work on the Café Project with assigning the class into their groups and then getting practical experience of actually measuring lengths. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Measures – Measuring Length. The class was issued a homework on the MyMaths website (Measuring Length) with a deadline of Friday 10th January for completion. We also spent a period on calculating perimeter of a shape and this is under Library – Shape – Area and Perimeter – Perimeter.

5C2 – week ending 20th December

This week some individuals of the class sat their Unit 2 – NAB re-assessment as they had failed the basic competence test the first time.

We went over the Extended Unit 2 Test to more accurately see how well each individual is coping with the course thus far.

We continued Unit 3 – Vectors (this will also be included in the Prelim in February). The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Vectors – Vectors 1 & 2 and then the harder work under Library – A Level – Core 4 – all of these lessons. We covered the work up to Chp 13 – Ex 13N which included collinearity and the section formula.

4B4 – week ending 20th December

We continued work on Unit 3 – Numeracy, with rounding to significant figures. This is under Library – Number – Estimating and Accuracy – Rounding Decimals as well as Significant Figures. We also did some work on percentages especially non-calculator work. This was followed by work on compound areas – i.e. shapes made up of two or more shapes joined together, and then onto calculating the circumference of a circle.

3A6 – week ending 20th December

We continued the topic Statistics with more work on the mean, median, mode & range. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Data – Processing Data –Mean and Mode as well as Median and Range. We then went onto covering the 5-Figure Summary, box plots and did some work on pie charts. This is on MyMaths – Library – Data – Presenting Data – Box and Whisker Plots, as well as Drawing Pie Charts.

This work will lead onto a project based on the statistics that the class will have learnt how to apply and the project will be the basis of evidence of the coursework that they have achieved.

2B1 – week ending 20th December

We looked at rounding to decimal places which will lead onto rounding to significant figures. This is under Library – Number – Estimating and Accuracy – Rounding Decimals as well as Significant Figures.

The class were assigned homework for Friday 13th December to investigate a famous mathematician. The class organised themselves into groups of 3 or 4 and gave a group presentation on the mathematician that they have investigated. Last week the class were producing posters or other presentations ready to deliver to the rest of the class this week. The class evaluated one another’s presentations whilst I checked the facts they presented. The class gave suggestions to one another on how to improve their presentations.

The class were given advance warning that there would be a Test week beginning 17th February – one period of revision then the test) on the following topics – Multiples, Factors & Primes; Powers & Roots; Pythagoras; Estimation & Rounding; Angles & Scale Drawings; Areas of compound shapes, Surface Area & Volume; Speed/Distance/Time; Circles as well as Patterns & Relationships.

1W2 – week ending 20th December

Last week the class sat a test on all the topics covered up to Friday 13th December. The topics in the test were Estimating & Rounding and Number Processes (add, subtract, multiply and divide) for Whole Numbers and Decimals, Symmetry, Angles, Problem Solving, Fractions & Percentages and Equations & Expressions. Depending upon the result, some pupils were given another test.

We then started with a bit of work preparing for the Café Project which will last most of next term. This will involve the pupils working in groups planning, designing, possibly creating a 3D model and presenting their ideas for the café to the rest of the class. Along the way we will be learning how mathematics plays an important part of this process, and the skills necessary for creating the design such as scale drawings & accurate measurements, perimeter, area (& volume), 2D & 3D shapes and how they can influence designs. In this way it is hoped that pupils will develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the practical applications of mathematics in real life. This week it involved finding out the definition of a rectangle and a square.

We went over the recent tests and pupils PLPs were discussed and issued.

We spent one period practicing plotting co-ordinates whilst creating festive pictures.
