5C2 – week ending 13th December

This week the class sat their Unit 2 – NAB which test the pupils at the basic competence for the topic and gives a good indicator of how well they are coping. This was followed by a period finishing off the topic Addition Formulae and Chapter 11.

A surprising number of individuals failed to pass the minimum competence NAB especially on the topic Circles. They should revise for the re-assessment next week.

Later in the week the class sat the Extended Unit Test to more accurately see how well each individual is coping with the course thus far. We also spent another period finishing Chapter 11 with the mixed exercise.

We started Unit 3 – beginning with Vectors (this will also be included in the Prelim in February).

4B4 – week ending 13th December

Some members of the class sat the re-assessment Unit Test on Relationships

We continued work on Unit 3 – Numeracy, with rounding to decimal places which will lead onto rounding to significant figures. This is under Library – Number – Estimating and Accuracy – Rounding Decimals as well as Significant Figures. We also did some work on adding/subtracting negative numbers and work on percentages.

3A6 – week ending 13th December

We continued the topic Statistics with some more practice at drawing different types of graphs mentioned above. We then did more work on the mean, median, mode & range. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Data – Processing Data –Mean and Mode as well as Median and Range.

This work will lead onto a project based on the statistics that the class will have learnt how to apply and the project will be the basis of evidence of the coursework that they have achieved.

2B1 – week ending 13th December

We continued with Direction & Bearings getting more practice on scale drawings & bearings which can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Scale & Similarity – Scale Finding Heights & Scale Drawing, also Library – Shape – Angles – Bearings.

The class were assigned homework for Friday 13th December to investigate a famous mathematician. The class organised themselves into groups of 3 or 4 and will be responsible for giving a group presentation on the mathematician that they have investigated. On Friday the groups were collating their information ready to give their presentations next week.

The class were given advance warning that there would be a Test week beginning 17th February – one period of revision then the test) on the following topics – Multiples, Factors & Primes; Powers & Roots; Pythagoras; Estimation & Rounding; Angles & Scale Drawings; Areas of compound shapes, Surface Area & Volume; Speed/Distance/Time; Circles as well as Patterns & Relationships.

2A1 – week ending 13th December

We continued the topic Multiples, Factors & Primes / Powers & Roots with some more work on expressing numbers as prime factors. The work for this topic can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Counting & Place Value – Multiples as well as Factors & Primes. We then looked at problems involving other powers of values.

1W2 – week ending 13th December

We finished the topic Fractions & Percentages. Depending upon which textbook a pupil was working from, then they might have been finding a fraction of an amount; simplifying fractions; changing percentages to a fraction or a decimal or vice versa; calculating percentages of an amount(including percentage increase & decrease); finding equivalent fractions; adding & subtracting fractions and multiplying & dividing fractions. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Fractions or Percentages. There are a lot of lessons under these two headings.

This was followed by one period of revision with a test on all the topics covered on Friday 13th December. The topics in the test are Estimating & Rounding and Number Processes (add, subtract, multiply and divide) for Whole Numbers and Decimals, Symmetry, Angles, Problem Solving, Fractions & Percentages and Equations & Expressions.

1C1 Week commencing 16th Dec 2014

This week we shall be going over the assessments we completed last week, and preparing for the S1 project which starts next term.

2014 will begin with the Cafe Project. We will investigate shape, accuracy, perimeter, area and many other aspects of Numeracy through designing a cafe. We will plan, design, draw and record our ideas for a cafe before presenting them to the class.

It’s a lot of fun, very hands-on and an excellent way to get to grips with some  practical applications of maths.

until then, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

3A7 Week commencing 16 Dec 2013

This week we are finishing off our statistics project.

Starting in 2014 we will be beginning the Access 3 qualification. This will consist of 12 small unit assessments that run alongside our “working towards N3 Lifeskills” course. This course will give you a recognised qualification, which was equivalent to the old Standard Grade Foundation level.

Well done this year-I was very pleased with how well you performed in the recent S3 exams. Build on this in 2014.
