Update for week commencing 16 Dec 2013

Congratulations to everyone who passed their Nab last week-the remaing few have their re-assessment on 16Th Dec. I will give out practice assessments in class, or you can use the one in your higher text book, p356.

Rest of week will be spent looking at vectors, which are in your prelim, which is on Friday 7th Feb 2014.

5C2 – week ending 6th December

We finished Chapter 11 – Addition Formulae (with the exception of Ex11E which is not required for the NAB and will be done after the NAB). The work covered included double angle formulae, trigonometric equations using the double angle formulae as well as the mixed exercise – this was Ex11G, H, I and J. Again I emphasized the need to have learnt the exact values for sine and cosine for angles of 30o, 45o, 60o, 90o and multiples thereof. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – A Level – Core 3 – Trigonometry – Double Angle Formulae.

The class had been issued with a Practice NAB to have been completed by Friday 6th December, and we then went through this detailing where the marks are awarded and the threshold scores required for each outcome.

The actual NAB will be on Tuesday 10th December. This will be followed with an Extended Unit Test to more accurately see how well each individual is coping with the course thus far as the NAB is just assessing minimum competence.

Next week we will spend two of the lessons spending a bit more time finishing off the chapter with extra practice on the mixed exercise before starting the next unit beginning with Vectors (this will also be included in the Prelim in February).

4B4 – week ending 6th December

The class sat the Unit Test on Relationships.  We then started Unit 3 – Numeracy, with the emphasis on mentally calculating multiplying & dividing by a two-digit number.

Despite having thoroughly gone over a practice assessment and having issued a second practice assessment, it was obvious that a significant number of the class had not bothered to revise at home in preparation for the Unit Test which is at a basic competency level. As a result a number of the class have failed and will need to do the re-assessment on Monday next week. I spent a period going through each assessment with each individual pupil so that they understood exactly what they should have done in order to answer each question. I also explained the process that will be applied for the re-assessment.

3A6 – week ending 6th December

We continued the topic Statistics looking at Stem & Leaf Diagrams followed by Scattergraphs. We also looked at mean, median, mode and range and the class were told a nonsense rhyme to help them recall how to find each of these averages. Then the class had practice at drawing a number of different types of graphs – bar graphs, line graphs, scattergraphs and stem & leaf diagrams. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Data – Presenting Data – Scattergraphs; Frequency Tables & Bar Charts and Line Graphs and Tw0-way Tables. Also under Library – Data – Processing Data – Stem & Leaf; Mean and Mode as well as Median and Range. The class also had some practice at drawing different types of graphs mentioned above.

This work will lead onto a project based on the statistics that the class will have learnt how to apply and the project will be the basis of evidence of the coursework that they have achieved.

2B1 – week ending 6th December

We continued with Direction & Bearings getting more practice on scale drawings which can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Scale & Similarity – Scale Finding Heights & Scale Drawing. We also looked at compasses & bearings so that work could be done on scale drawings & bearings.

The class were assigned homework for Friday 13th December to investigate a famous mathematician. The class organised themselves into groups of 3 or 4 and will be responsible for giving a group presentation on the mathematician that they have investigated.

2A1 – week ending 6th December

We continued the topic Multiples, Factors & Primes / Powers & Roots with testing squares/square roots and cubes/cube roots which the class are expected to learn. We then went onto investigating & learning about prime numbers before expressing numbers as prime factors. The work for this topic can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Counting & Place Value – Multiples as well as Factors & Primes, and also Number – Powers & Roots – HCF and LCM and also Squares & Roots

1W2 – week ending 6th December

We started the topic Fractions & Percentages. Depending upon which textbook a pupil was working from, then they might have been finding a fraction of an amount; simplifying fractions; changing percentages to a fraction or a decimal or vice versa; calculating percentages of an amount(including percentage increase & decrease); finding equivalent fractions and adding & subtracting fractions. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Fractions or Percentages. There are a lot of lessons under these two headings.

Next week we will finish the topic off in the first two lessons before we have one period of revision with a test on all the topics covered on Friday 13thDecember. The topics in the test are Estimating & Rounding and Number Processes (add, subtract, multiply and divide) for Whole Numbers and Decimals, Symmetry, Angles, Problem Solving, Fractions & Percentages and Equations & Expressions.

5C2 – week ending 29th November

Homework 2-4 on Integration was due in on Tuesday 26th November.

We dealt with Chapter 10 – 3D Trigonometry as a prelude to Chapter 11 – Addition Formulae and we quickly covered the 4 expansions for sin(A±B) and cos(A±B) with numerous questions getting practice on these. I pointed out that this style of these early questions tend to occur in the Objective questions and are worth 2 marks each and I reminded the class that everyone needs to have learnt the exact values for sine and cosine for angles of 30o, 45o, 60o, 90o and multiples thereof as they were told to do when we did Unit 1. We also covered the applications of the addition formulae. This took us up to and including Ex11F and the work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – A Level – Core 3 – Trigonometry – Addition Formulae.

The class were issued with a Practice NAB to be completed by Friday 6th December when we will go through it all with guidance on the threshold scores and how the marks are awarded. The class were also reminded that after they have sat the minimum competence NAB that they will then be given the Extended Unit Test to more accurately see how well each individual is coping with the course thus far.

4B4 – week ending 29th November

This week we dealt with the last topic Scattergraphs which tied in with the work previously covered on Straight Line to discover the line of best fit in a scattergraph. Again more of the reasoning style of question. This is under Library – Data – Presenting Data – Scatter Graphs and Line of Best Fit.

Then we went onto two practice assessments to prepare the pupils for what will be in the test.

The class were again reminded that the Unit Test on the Relationships Unit will be the week beginning the 2nd December. The pupils should refer to the summary of the topics in each Unit of Mathematics – National 4 to ensure they are clear on what will be in the test.
