5C2 – week ending 8th November

Homework 2-1 on Polynomials was due in on Tuesday 5th November and the majority of the class had some problems with one question in particular which was covered in an earlier exercise, so I explained where the mistake was made.

We finished Chapter 7 – Polynomials. The notes on this topic were finalized, and the mixed exercise 7K was given for individuals to complete at home.

Then we started Chapter 12 – Circles and the notes and exercises need to have been completed up to Ex12J by next Tuesday 12th November. Much of this is fairly straightforward albeit mostly algebraic manipulation and being able to factorise expressions. We got onto intersection of straight lines and circles. We had a brief reminder of some of the circle facts that everyone should remember from Standard Grade and is on the MyMaths website under Library – A Level – Core 1 – Graphs – Circle Geometry & Core 2 – Equations of Circles.

The class were issued with homework 2-8 a mixed homework and this is due in on Thursday 14th November.

4B4 – week ending 8th November

This week we continued with the Relationships Unit with Pythagoras. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Pythagoras – Pythagoras Theorem. We used Pythagoras to find the distance between two coordinates followed by a mixed exercise on the topic. The class were given a homework on the Mymaths website (Pythagoras) with a deadline of Tuesday 12th November for completion.

We then spent one lesson on using a scale factor (including a fractional scale factor) to enlarge or reduce a shape.

Next we had a recap of the various angle facts learnt in primary, S1, S2 & S3 before deciding what work needed to be covered regarding angles parallel lines, symmetry, triangles & quadrilaterals. This is under Library – Shape – Angles – Angle Sums / Angle Reasoning & Angles in Parallel Lines.

3A6 – week ending 8th November

This week we continued with Trigonometry finding a missing angle. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Trigonometry – Trig Missing Sides (although we only want to concern ourselves with the tangent ratio at this point).

Then we went onto Straight Lines and how to draw a straight line given an equation. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Graphs – Drawing Graphs.

The tests next week are Working Towards National 4, with the Non-Calculator test on Wednesday 13th November, and the Calculator test the following day. Thus we will be able to do some revision on Tuesday next week. The work covered in S1, S2 and S3 to date could appear in the test. The main topics are – Scientific Notation (Standard Form); Pythagoras & Trigonometry; Integers, Brackets & Equations; Angles & Scale Drawing; Speed / Distance / Time; Symmetry; Area & Volume and also Straight Line.

2B1 – week ending 8th November

We continued the topic Multiples, Factors & Primes / Powers & Roots with a look at what is a factor? This was followed with testing squares/square roots and cubes/cube roots which the class are expected to learn. We then went onto investigating & learning about prime numbers before expressing numbers as prime factors. The work for this topic can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Counting & Place Value – Multiples as well as Factors & Primes, and also Number – Powers & Roots – HCF and LCM and also Squares & Roots

2A1 – week ending 8th November

We continued with Direction & Bearings getting more practice on ratio and scales before moving on to actual scale drawings which can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Scale & Similarity – Map Scales & Scale Finding Heights.

1W2 – week ending 8th November

We finished the topic Decimals with further calculations involving decimals and the class handed in a homework on Decimals.

We also spent a period on more Problem Solving with the class working in pairs to solve a number of different problems.

We then began the topic Equations & Expressions. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Expressions & Formulae – Function Machines.

5C2 – week ending 1st November

This week we were working on Chapter 7 – Polynomials. We completed the notes and the exercises up to and including Ex7I. If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under A Level – Core 1 – Polynomials – Intersecting Lines and Curves 1 & 2, as well as Core 2 – Factor Remainder – Factor Theorem; Dividing Polynomials and Remainder Theorem.

The class were issued with homework 2-1 on Polynomials and this is due in on Tuesday 5th November.

4B4 – week ending 1st November

This week we continued with the Relationships Unit on recapping all of the previous lessons dealing with Equations as a final reminder of what they would be expected to manage to solve.

We then went onto the topic of Changing the Subject which tests the ability to rearrange an equation by working backwards through the mnemonic BOMDAS. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Expressions & Formulae – Rearranging 1.

Next we started revising a topic covered towards the end of S2 and also in S2 – Pythagoras. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Pythagoras – Pythagoras Theorem.

The class will sit the Unit Test on the Relationships Unit probably the week beginning the 2nd December. The pupils should refer to the summary of the topics in each Unit of Mathematics – National 4 to ensure they are clear on what will be in the test.

3A6 – week ending 1st November

This week we spent two periods revising Area & Volumes and work done in S1 & S2 on Equations as a general reminder of some of the work that could be expected in the test.

We then went on to the topic Trigonometry with an introduction to the Tangent ratio and learnt how to operate the calculators properly to allow finding a missing side using the tangent ratio. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Trigonometry – Trig Missing Sides (although we only want to concern ourselves with the tangent ratio at this point).

The test will take place two weeks after the October break (week beginning 11th November) and the class will sit the National 4 Test, so the work covered in S1, S2 and S3 to date could appear in the test. The main topics are – Scientific Notation (Standard Form); Pythagoras & Trigonometry; Integers, Brackets & Equations; Angles & Scale Drawing; Speed / Distance / Time; Symmetry; Area & Volume and also Straight Line.

2B1 – week ending 1st November

The class sat the test based on the topics covered Integers, 2D & 3D shapes – Triangles & Quadrilaterals (including Angles and Areas), Fractions, Ratio & Proportion and Equations & Expressions.

The class sat an Upper Test at Level 3 and anyone getting 75% or above was given the Level 4 Test whilst anyone getting a less than optimal result was also given an easier test. The results of the test were given along with a review of the answers to the tests.

We then started the topic Multiples, Factors & Primes / Powers & Roots with a look at what is a multiple? This was followed by copying two tables dealing with squares/square roots and cubes/cube roots which the class are expected to learn as this will help not only with this topic but later topics on Scientific Notation and Pythagoras. The work for this topic can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Counting & Place Value – Multiples as well as Factors & Primes, and also Number – Powers & Roots – HCF and LCM and also Squares & Roots and Indices 1.
