2A1 – week ending 1st November

The class sat the test based on the topics covered Integers, 2D & 3D shapes – Triangles & Quadrilaterals (including Angles and Areas), Fractions, Ratio & Proportion and Equations & Expressions.

The class sat an Upper Test at Level 3 and anyone getting 75% or above was given the Level 4 Test whilst anyone getting a less than optimal result was also given an easier test.

We then started the topic Direction & Bearings which would incorporate scale drawings and also ratio for scale drawings. We looked at ratio and scales for scale drawings which can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Scale & Similarity – Map Scales.

1W2 – week ending 1st November

We continued the topic Decimals with more practice on multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 before moving onto multiplying & dividing a decimal number by a whole number and then onto rounding decimal numbers. This can be found on the Mymaths website under Library – Number – Decimals.

We also spent a period on more Problem Solving with the class working in pairs to solve a number of different problems.

The class were given notice that they would have a test probably during the week beginning 9th December and this would be based on the topics covered since beginning S1 – Whole Numbers, Symmetry, Angles, Problem Solving, Decimals, Fractions & Percentages (not yet done) and lastly Equations & Expressions (still to be covered).

5C2 – week ending 11th October

This week some pupils were sitting their NAB & the Extended Unit Test that they missed through absences, or were re-sitting their NAB to pass the Outcomes that they had failed. This meant that it was quite tricky to get through the work, and as such we had not completed all the work on Tuesday to allow the homework to be done (this will be re-scheduled).

By the end of the week we had finished Chapter 8 and Quadratics and anyone who hasn’t should ensure that they have caught up by the end of the October break.

We went over all the questions in the Extended Unit Test as this should give a more accurate idea of whether a pupil is coping well with the course and the sort of grade they are achieving at the moment. Pupils should be aiming for 65% which would equate to a Grade B, as once we are finished the whole course they should be able to improve on this.

4B4 – week ending 11th October

This week we continued with the Relationships Unit on equations with solving simple equations (albeit sometimes with negative numbers as the solution), and the class were reminded of the need to check their answers. This led onto simplifying expressions with brackets as well as equations with single brackets including negative multipliers

If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Algebraic Manipulation, as well as Equations – Linear.

3A6 – week ending 11th October

This week we continued the topic Speed / Distance / Time with a mixture of calculating Speed, Distance or Time, before looking at Distance-Time Graphs. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Measures – Speed, and also at Library – Algebra – Graphs – Real Life Graphs and also Distance/Time Graphs.

The class had a homework due on Thursday 10th October on the Mymaths website (Speed) which the majority of the class completed very well (although a few did not do so well even though everyone has been told they should be getting 75% or above when tackling homeworks on the Mymaths website as there are lessons linked with each homework that give examples of how to do the homework and the pupils get instantaneous feedback of how they have done). However there were one or two individuals who did not do it despite daily reminders and a week in which to do it. All parents should have been informed of their childrens’ access details so that you can monitor their progress at home.

We then went on to recap work which had been done in S1 and in S2 – Area & Volume and some of this is under Library – Shape – Area & Perimeter  and also Library – Shape – Volume & Surface Area.

The test will take place two weeks after the October break (week beginning 11th November) and the class will sit the National 4 Test, so the work covered in S1, S2 and S3 to date could appear in the test. The main topics are – Scientific Notation (Standard Form); Pythagoras & Trigonometry; Integers, Brackets & Equations; Angles & Scale Drawing; Speed / Distance / Time; Symmetry; Area & Volume and also Straight Line.

2B1 – week ending 11th October

This week finished the topic Fractions & Percentages continuing with how to switch between fractions to percentages to decimals and vice versa from many common values. We then moved onto fractions – simplifying, equivalent and converting from mixed numbers to improper (top heavy) fractions. This led onto adding & subtracting fractions and then onto multiplying and dividing fractions.

If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Fractions, which has a lot of work and examples.

The class were given notice that they would have a test the first week back after the October holidays (most likely the second lesson).

This week we finished the topic Equations with extra practice on multiplying out single brackets including negative multipliers as well as equations with fractions and the class were reminded of the need to check their answers.

This week we continued with the topic Decimals with extra practice on adding and subtracting decimals, before moving onto multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. This can be found on the Mymaths website under Library – Number – Decimals. The class had a homework due on Thursday 10th October on the Mymaths website (Adding & Subtracting Decimals) which the majority of the class completed very well. However there were one or two individuals who did not do it despite daily reminders and a week in which to do it. All parents should have been informed of their childrens’ access details so that you can monitor their progress at home.

We also did more work on Problem Solving – Elimination and will probably continue to practice the strategies for solving problems after the October break.

5C2 – week ending 4th October

This week the class sat their Unit 1 – NAB which test the pupils at the basic competence for the topic and gives a good indicator of how well they are coping. This was followed by a period finishing off the topic  Differentiation and Chapter 6.

Later in the week the class sat the Extended Unit Test to more accurately see how well each individual is coping with the course thus far. The results were a bit disappointing and indicated that a number of pupils have not properly studied.

We then started the next unit beginning with Polynomials & Quadratics. As a number of the class were involved with other activities causing them to miss out on a double lesson, they need to ensure that they have their notes on this topic up to date. The topic Quadratics is something that they should have mastered in Standard Grade and there are a number of aspects which they should remember.

If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under A Level – Core 1 – Polynomials – Factorising Quadratics, as well as Solving Quadratics, Quadratic Formula and also Completing the Square (which we covered with an easier method of Comparing Coefficients).

The class were issued with homework 2-2 on Quadratics and this is due in on Thursday 10th October.

4B4 – week ending 4th October

We continued Unit 2 – Relationships, Straight Line and investigated negative gradients. We were using the new textbooks that arrived two weeks ago (TeeJay Publishers – National N4-2). We were able to see the formula generalising Straight Lines.

This led onto the next part of the Relationships Unit which was equations. The class were solving simple equations (albeit sometimes with negative numbers as the solution), and the class were reminded of the need to check their answers.

If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Algebraic Manipulation, as well as Equations – Linear.
