3A6 – week ending 4th October

This week we continued the topic Speed / Distance / Time which had been done in S2 but we had more practice of using the various formulae to calculate distance, speed and time.

We spent another period revising some of the work covered in S2 on Integers as part of continual practice of Non-Calculator Skills.

The class was issued a homework on the Mymaths website (Speed) with a deadline of Thursday 10th October for completion.

2B1 – week ending 4th October

This week we finished the topic Equations with extra practice on multiplying out single brackets including negative multipliers as well as equations with fractions and the class were reminded of the need to check their answers.

If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Algebraic Manipulation, as well as Equations – Linear.

We started the topic Fractions & Percentages for which the class were already learning how to switch between fractions to percentages to decimals and vice versa from many common values. We were tackling percentage increase/decrease (profit/loss)  before starting compound interest).

If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Percentages – Percentage Change 1,  as well as Change as a Percentage, and also Library – Number – Money & Finance – Compound Interest.

The class were given notice that they would have a test the first week back after the October holidays (most likely the second lesson).

1W2 – week ending 4th October

We did more work on Problem Solving – be systematic, with the class challenged to find as many triangles in a diagram as they possibly could by being systematic (the target was over 70).

We then started the topic Decimals with a recap of adding and subtracting decimals as well as recognising the parts to a decimal number. The class was issued a homework on the Mymaths website (Adding & Subtracting Decimals) with a deadline of Thursday 10th October for completion.

Extra practice on the Mymaths website can be accessed from Library – Number – Decimals.

5C2 – week ending 27th September

This week we continued the topic  Differentiation and Chapter 6. We finished the chapter. The class were reminded that they need to have mastered the Standard Grade work on Fractions, Indices and Factorising.

The class had their homework 6 on Differentiation returned (and the opportunity to seek assistance with any problens relating to this) – this will also provide the pupils with a good indicator of how well they are coping with the topic as the basic competence NAB test is scheduled for the week beginning the 30th September.

On Friday we went over the whole of the Practice NAB with guidance on the threshold scores and how the marks are awarded ready for the actual NAB on Tuesday 1st October. This will be followed with an Extended Unit Test to more accurately see how well each individual is coping with the course thus far.

We will then be starting the next unit beginning with Polynomials & Quadratics.

4B4 – week ending 27th September

Last week the class sat the Unit Test on Expressions & Formulae and so once everyone had ccompleted it, I was then able to go though it and explain how to tackle every single question. Everyone should know how they got on with the minimum competence questions that everyone should manage.

We continued Unit 2 – Relationships, beginning with Straight Line which they had encountered in S3. We began using the new textbooks that arrived last week (TeeJay Publishers – National N4-2). We were able to see the formula generalising Straight Lines.
