5C2 – week ending 13th September

This week we continued the topic  Differentiation and Chapter 6. We finished up to Exercise 6N – which tied together the earlier exercises in the topic along with some of the other work in Unit 1. The class were reminded that they need to have mastered the Standard Grade work on Fractions, Indices and Factorising.

This week’s work culminated in sketching graphs of various functions by using Differentiation to identify the Stationary Points on a graph as well as the other major features such as the roots, where it crosses the y-axis and the shape of the graph.

The class were issued with homework 6 on Differentiation and this is due in on Tuesday 17th September. This will also provide the pupils with a good indicator of how well they are coping with the topic as the basic competence NAB test is scheduled for the week beginning the 30th September.

4B4 – week ending 13th September

We continued to refer to the summary of the topics in each Unit of Mathematics – National 4 and kept the focus on the first Unit test (Expressions & Formulae) the week beginning 16th September.

This week we completed the Statistics topic (again revision this time of S3 work), and the class reminded about Mean, Median and Modal values (a nonsense rhyme was provided to aid with memory of these) before comparing results between data sets. Next we covered constructing pie charts and calculating the angles required before having a refresher on how to calculate Probability.

We spent one period of revision and one period doing  a Practice Assessment which was then taken away by the pupils to work on over the weekend in preparation for the Unit test on Monday.

3A6 – week ending 13th September

This week we finished the topic Angles and practiced drawing shapes using angle measurers. We also covered angles in a triangle.

We then started the topic Area with a recap of the formulae that everyone should remember & be able to use to find the area of a rectangle followed by the area of a triangle.

The class were issued with a homework on Area & Perimeter to be done in their homework jotter and is due to be handed in on Monday 16th September.

2A1 – week ending 13th September

This half of the week we started the topic Equations and recapped the work done is S1. We covered simplifying expressions before moving on to simple equations (albeit sometimes with negative numbers as the solution).

If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Algebraic Manipulation, as well as Equations – Linear.

2B1 – week ending 13th September

This week we started the topic Equations and recapped the work done is S1. We covered simplifying expressions before moving on to simple equations (albeit sometimes with negative numbers as the solution). The class were issued a homework on this due by Friday 13th September. We also did extra practice on multiplying out single brackets.

If anyone needs extra practice, the work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Algebraic Manipulation, as well as Equations – Linear.

1W2 – week ending 13th September

The class have finished the topic Angles  and after practicing both measuring and drawing angles were covering complementary and supplementary angles. Some also did vertically opposite angles, corresponding angles and alternate angles.

Next week we will be recapping work on the topic Symmetry both reflection and rotation symmetry before also covering tesselations/tilings. As a consequence and with next week being a short week, the class were issued a homework on symmetry to be done in their homework jotters to be handed in on Tuesday the 17th September.

5C2 – week ending 6th September

This week we started the pupil notes on the topic Differentiation and Chapter 6. We finished up to Exercise 6H – this is a very important topic covering almost a third of the final coursework. It covers a number of related topics that it is essential the pupils have mastered from Standard Grade – the laws of indices and how to do basic calculations involving fractions.

The  homework covering Chapter 4 with a few questions revising the Straight Line topic as well was due in and a number of pupils did not spend enough time on this. Too many have forgotten various aspects of the work covered before the summer and need to ensure that they revise the Straight Line. I went over every single question in the homework in order to ensure that everyone had the chance to learn from their mistakes.
