5C2 – week ending 14th March

We finished Chapter 14 – Further Calculus which is a mixture of Differentiation & Integration with more work on the Chain Rule including trigonometric functions especially integrating harder trigonometric functions. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – A Level – Core 3 – Differentiation – Differentiating Trig Functions & Chain Rule (also Product Rule & Quotient Rule) as well as Library – A Level – Core 3 – Integration – Integrating Sine & Cosine and A Level – Core 4 – Integration – Trig Functions; By Substitution and also Harder Substitution.

The class were issued with homework 3-4 on Further Calculus and this is due in on Tuesday 18th March.

MyMaths is now accessible via the Puffin Academy flash browser which allows pupils to easily access Mymaths on most tablet and mobile devices, including iPads. Puffin Academy is a free, mobile and tablet Flash browser. It is specifically designed for pupils, teachers and parents, as it always enforces site filtering by only allowing whitelisted educational websites to be accessed. We were able to return to making a start to the National 5 work with the first unit – Applications, with the topic Trigonometry. We began with a recap of the trigonometry skills covered in National 4. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Trigonometry – Trig Missing Angles and Trig Missing Sides. This led onto finding the area of a triangle which wasn’t right angled using a new formula. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Trigonometry – Trig Area of a Triangle. This led onto the Sine Rule which can be found at Library – Shape – Trigonometry – Sine Rule.

3A6 – week ending 14th March

This week we finished the topic Brackets & Equations continuing work done in S1 & S2 on this topic. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Algebraic Manipulation – Simplifying 1 & 2 and Single Brackets as well as Algebra – Equations Linear – Simple Equations and Solving Equations.

The class was issued a homework on the MyMaths website (Simple Equations) with a deadline of Tuesday 18th March for completion. The homework is also detailed on the website that the school now uses to inform parents of homeworks – https://harlawacademy.showmyhomework.co.uk

We then went onto the topic Percentages as the class were reminded that after the Easter holidays they would be sitting their S3 exams, which would include a Non-Calculator paper as well as a Calculator paper. Any of the work covered in S1, S2 and S3 to date could appear in the test. We looked at using a calculator to calculate percentages as well as finding percentage increases & decreases. This work can be found on the MyMaths website under – Library – Number – Percentages – Percentages of Amounts 1 & 2 as well as Percentage Change 1 & 2.

2B1 – week ending 14th March

We continued the Finance Project looking at the costs of food shopping, discussing the benefits of buying in bulk and costing different products and working out which was cheaper. We also looked at future foods and considered the land use requirements for different food stuffs (i.e. the amount of protein provided by lamb versus snails and the space required to produce 1kg of each). For calculating value for money it can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Money and Finance – Best Buys and Value for Money.

The class was issued a homework on the MyMaths website (Best Buys) with a deadline of Thursday 20th March for completion.

MyMaths is now accessible via the Puffin Academy flash browser which allows pupils to easily access Mymaths on most tablet and mobile devices, including iPads. At the end of the week, the class was involved in the BP Trading game along with a couple of other classes. The Enterprise Trading Game is a straightforward work-related game which enables students to put enterprise, maths and business skills into action through a simulation of real-life trading. This approach encourages active learning, problem-solving, thinking skills and teamwork. Playing the game enables the students to:

  • apply functional maths skills in a real-life context involving supply and demand
  • gain an insight into how companies make business decisions and how the wider business environment affects success or failure
  • make informed decisions based on careful analysis of information
  • understand how a commodity such as crude oil is traded and what factors affect market price
  • develop problem-solving, decision-making and teamwork skills.
  • recognise the importance of timing and appropriate risk taking

5C2 – week ending 7th March

Homework 3-5 on Wave Function was due in on Thursday 6th March.

We finished Unit 3 – Wave Function and the whole of Chapter 16 especially the mixed exercise. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – A Level – Core 3 – Trigonometry – R-Alpha Method.

We then began Chapter 14 – Further Calculus which is a mixture of Differentiation & Integration which they should have mastered in Unit 1 & 2. As such, again pupils should have mastered essential topics from Standard Grade – the laws of indices and how to do basic calculations involving fractions which are in the Essential Skills chapter and can also be found on the MyMaths website. There will be yet more questions referring to the exact values of trigonometric angles.

We covered differentiating & integrating sine and cosine ratios before moving onto the Chain Rule and the class should have completed up to and including Ex14G by Tuesday 11th March. Once more algebraic manipulation is such an important aspect of being able to manage this work. The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – A Level – Core 3 – Differentiation – Differentiating Trig Functions & Chain Rule (also Product Rule & Quotient Rule) as well as Library – A Level – Core 3 – Integration – Integrating Sine & Cosine.
