4B4 – week ending 7th March

The first couple of lessons involved certain individuals in the class re-sitting the Added Value Unit Assessment as well as the  National 4 Unit Assessments on – Expressions & Formulae Unit  and Relationships.

A number of pupils failed to achieve the Numeracy Unit last week. As a consequence the class spent most of the week revising the Numeracy work as the re-sit for this would be towards the end of the week.

3A6 – week ending 7th March

This week we continued the topic Brackets & Equations continuing work done in S1 & S2 on this topic. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Algebraic Manipulation – Simplifying 1 & 2 and Single Brackets as well as Algebra – Equations Linear – Simple Equations and Solving Equations.

We also spent one period doing Non-Calculator work on the topic Percentages as the class were reminded that after the Easter holidays they would be sitting their S3 exams, which would include a Non-Calculator paper as well as a Calculator paper. Any of the work covered in S1, S2 and S3 to date could appear in the test.

The class had been issued a homework on the MyMaths website (Single Brackets) with a deadline of Wednesday 5th March for completion. The homework is also detailed on the website that the school now uses to inform parents of homeworks – https://harlawacademy.showmyhomework.co.uk

2B1 – week ending 7th March

We continued the Finance Project with a look at finance in the news as it occurred such as the effect that the situation in Ukraine might have on gas bills, the rising costs of child-care and how this might affect family finances as well as the effects of bank interest rates over the past 5 years and how this alters how much is added on to savings in an account.

We spent another two lessons on compound interest and successive percentage change, before moving onto calculating VAT mentally. This then led onto looking at the cost of food shopping.

The class should log onto the MyMaths website and revise the lessons linked with percentages, in particular compound interest for next week. The percentage work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Percentages – Percentage Change 1 & 2 as well as Number – Money & Finance – Simple Interest, Compound Interest and also Depreciation. The homework is also detailed on the website that the school now uses to inform parents of homeworks – https://harlawacademy.showmyhomework.co.uk

For next week the class are expected to investigate the costs of a family food shop, collating data on how much is spent on a number of typical items in a shopping trolley (perhaps even recording the cost per 100g of particular items), and we will then contrast that with data collected from previous years to spot how costs have altered.

We spent a lesson on calculating Percentage Profit/Loss, followed by another lesson on compound interest and successive percentage change.

1W2 – week ending 7th March

In continuing the Café Project the class looked at 3D shapes. We had another lesson on how to draw 3D shapes on paper. This can be found on the BBC Bitesize website http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks3/maths/shape_space/3d_shapes/revision/2/ and the next two pages especially page 4 for drawing shapes.

We also looked at the nets of cubes and cuboids and other 3D Shapes. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – 2D and 3D Shapes – Nets of 3D Shapes. We also looked at typical sizes used by architects for the interior of a café in terms of seating arrangements, service areas etc. We finished the week off with skeleton models of 3D shapes.

The groups need to be ready to give their presentations next Friday on their finished designs for their cafés (poster/powerpoint; models; scale drawings; computer designs and/or interior/exterior design and layout).

5C2 – week ending 28th February

We continued the topic Wave Function which is relatively straightforward as long as the working is set out properly, and the same for every question (this is a topic which frequently occurs in the non-calculator paper relating to exact values). This week we covered the bulk of Chapter16 looking at expansions for sin/cos(ax – α) before moving onto solving trigonometric equations of this type (again referring back to work covered in Unit 1). The work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – A Level – Core 3 – Trigonometry – R-Alpha Method.

The class were issued with homework 3-5 on Wave Function and this is due in on Thursday 6th March. The homework is also detailed on the website that the school now uses to inform parents of homeworks – https://harlawacademy.showmyhomework.co.uk

4B4 – week ending 28th February

The first lesson was spent with the class doing the practice assessment on the SQA website www.sqasolar.org.uk National 4 – Numeracy. We would then spend another lesson doing the actual assessment online. A number of pupils failed to achieve the Numeracy Unit on this occasion. We spent part of another lesson revising as we should be able to do a resit for this towards the end of next week.

We made a start to the National 5 work with the first unit – Applications, with the topic Trigonometry. We began with a recap of the trigonometry skills covered in National 4. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Trigonometry – Trig Missing Angles and Trig Missing Sides.

2B1 – week ending 28th February

We continued the Finance Project with an introductory lesson discussing a number of topics that the class might consider for the presentations that they will need to produce in groups. We talked about a number of aspects of finance and how it might well impact on every individual, we covered a range of topics such as house costs/rent; how the weather can affect farmers crops and the knock on effect on cereal costs; the average cost of student debt; average cost of a wedding and how some of the things that we might take for granted could change in 20-30 years.

One aspect of finance that keeps cropping up is percentages whether it is calculating percentage reduction in a sale, percentage increase to a salary or to house prices and in particular compound interest. As a consequence we spent a lesson on Compound Interest.

The class should log onto the MyMaths website and revise the lessons linked with percentages, in particular compound interest for next week.
