1W2 – week ending 14th February

This week the class were calculating the area of circles. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Area & Perimeter – Area of Circles.

In continuing the Café Project we looked at how buildings are constructed in particular how bricks are laid in order to make the structure rigid. The class had some practical work on constructing Lego houses to help them to appreciate this as well as to give them some ideas as to how they might present their finished design with the use of models.

The groups need to be ready to give their presentations in four weeks on their finished designs for their cafés (poster/powerpoint; models; scale drawings; computer designs and/or interior/exterior design and layout).

3A6 – week ending 7th February

This week we continued with Ratio looking at how it occurs in real life and how to split a quantity in a given ratio. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Ratio and Proportion – Ratio Dividing 1 & 2.

The class had a homework on Ratio to hand in on Monday 3rd February which a couple of people did not do.

2B1 – week ending 7th February

We continued the topic Patterns & Relationships finding a pattern for a given sequence of numbers as well as generating numbers in a given sequence. We also looked at finding which particular term in a sequence generated which specific value. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Sequences – Sequences and also nth Term. The class were reminded of how to perform these sorts of calculations without a calculator, as the test in two weeks would be without a calculator.

2A1 – week ending 7th February

We went on to the topic Speed/Distance/Time in particular using the appropriate formula for calculating these. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Measure – Speed, and we also looked at Distance/Time Graphs. Library – Algebra – Graphs – Distance-Time Graphs. The class were reminded of how to perform these sorts of calculations without a calculator, as the test in two weeks would be without a calculator.

The pupils were reminded that they should know how to convert common fractions into decimal form and how these relate to converting time from hours into minutes in order to perform various calculations. Similar work should have been done converting percentages into fractions and/or decimals and vice versa (to be found on the Mymaths website under Library – Number – Percentages – Frac Dec Perc 1 & 2).

1W2 – week ending 7th February

We continued work on the Café Project – finishing the scale drawings of the site. The next couple of lessons involved investigating the link between the diameter and the circumference of a circle followed by work on calculating the circumference of circles. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Area & Perimeter – Circumference of a Circle.

The class had a homework on the MyMaths website (Area of a Triangle) with a deadline of Friday 7th February for completion.

5C2 – week ending 31st January

The class were reminded that they should spend a minimum of 2.5 hours a week on revision. The class were directed to the Higher Maths Objective Questions which can be found on the web as part of the preparation for the Prelim.

We spent more time doing some questions from a past Prelim. The class can still access the MyMaths website to assist with their revision by going to A Level and then Core 1, 2, 3 or 4. Not everything can be found here, but they should be aware of where most topics can be found, as well as some topics that are on the webpage that they do not need to bother about as the website is designed to reflect the English curriculum.

Past papers, complete with marking schemes available on SQA website.

The class were reminded that they can seek help if required whilst study leave is on as long as I am free at the time.

Next week we will finish our Access 3 tests and then we can move onto new material.

Just one more assessment to go for most of you- although the comment on my teaching which went something along the lines “Can we pleeeeaaassseeee just do the test now” would suggest you have all rather enjoyed the experience!

4B4 – week ending 31st January

We continued work on Unit 3 – Numeracy, with Speed/Distance/Time work. This is on the MyMaths website under Library –Shape – Measure – Speed concentrating on mixed questions. The class hawas issued a homework on the MyMaths website (Speed) with a deadline of Thursday 30th January for completion.

We also spent one period doing some work on graphs particularly stem & leaf diagrams and this can be found at Library – Data – Processing Data – Stem & Leaf.

We then spent a lesson on plotting co-ordinates over 3 quadrants which led to completing a particular shape as this was part of the mandatory content of the Added Value Unit and was not covered anywhere else. This then allowed us to spend two periods doing Practice Added Value Unit Tests. We kept referring each question to the mandatory content (summary of the topics that each pupil has in their possession) so that everyone was clear exactly what they are expected to be able to manage and that they have an example of the style of question and how to tackle it. The Added Value Unit Test is split into a non-calculator and a calculator paper.

The class were reminded that they can seek help if required whilst study leave is on as long as I am free at the time.

The class had a homework due on Thursday 30th January on the Mymaths website (Speed) which the majority of the class completed very well (although a few did not do so well even though everyone has been told they should be getting 75% or above when tackling homeworks on the Mymaths website as there are lessons linked with each homework that give examples of how to do the homework and the pupils get instantaneous feedback of how they have done). However there were a few individuals who did not do it despite daily reminders and a week in which to do it.

Have been working towards their cafe design.

We have looked at measurement, area and perimeter, and then this week we have studied the concept of volume and how we can calculate volume of both cubes and cuboids and then other (more elaborate) arrangements of cubes and cuboids.

Results of competition available Monday.
