3A6 – week ending 31st January

This week we followed on from the topic Straight Line by looking at finding a connection between related graphs and which part of an equation of a straight line is related to how the graph is drawn or where it crosses the y-axis. This led on to calculating the gradient of a straight line. This work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Graphs – Gradients and also y=mx+c.

Having finished this topic we had a recap of some work done in S2 with Ratio looking at how it occurs in real life and how to calculate/simplify ratios. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Ratio and Proportion – Ratio Introduction.

The class were issued a homework on Ratio to be done in their homework jotters for Monday 3rd February.

2B1 – week ending 31st January

We went on to the topic Scientific Notation/Standard Form which carries on some of the work done in the Powers topic. The class learnt how to change from very large or small numbers into scientific notation and vice versa. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Number – Standard Form – Standard Form Large and Standard Form Small.

We then went onto the topic Patterns & Relationships with a reminder of some work done in S1 on finding a pattern for a given sequence of numbers as well as generating numbers in a given sequence. This can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Sequences – Sequences and also nth Term.

The class had a homework due on Friday 31st January on the Mymaths website (Speed)

The class were reminded that there would be a Test week beginning 17th February – one period of revision then the test on the following topics – Multiples, Factors & Primes; Powers & Roots; Pythagoras; Estimation & Rounding; Angles & Scale Drawings; Areas of compound shapes, Surface Area & Volume; Speed/Distance/Time; Scientific Notation; Circles as well as Patterns & Relationships. Previous work in S1 & S2 could also be tested.

2A1 – week ending 31st January

We continued the topic Circles with arcs & sectors of a circle. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Area and Perimeter – Circumference of a Circle and Area of Circles and Arcs, Sectors, Segments.

The class had a homework due on Friday 31st January on the Mymaths website (Area of a Circle)

1W2 – week ending 31st January

We continued work on the Café Project with work on scale drawing which is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Scale & Similarity – Scale Drawing. We discussed how scale drawings are used in real life, and we watched some video clips from www.bbc.co.uk before discussing the practicalities of surveying the gardens opposite the school which involved the use of coordinates. We then spent a lesson actually surveying the gardens before making scale drawings of the site.

The class had a homework due on Wednesday 29th January on the Mymaths website (Area of a Rectangle), not everyone completed this despite daily reminders.

The class was issued a homework on the MyMaths website (Area of a Triangle) with a deadline of Friday 7th February for completion.

5C2 – week ending 24th January

The class were reminded that the date of their final exam would be Tuesday 6th May and that aside from this we would shortly be needing to start preparing for the Prelim (Friday 7th February), and that they should spend a minimum of 2.5 hours a week on revision. The class were directed to the Higher Maths Objective Questions which can be found on the web as part of the preparation for the Prelim.

We spent more time doing some questions from a past Prelim, This was followed with Objective Questions, and then some more past papers. The class can still access the MyMaths website to assist with their revision by going to A Level and then Core 1, 2, 3 or 4. Not everything can be found here, but they should be aware of where most topics can be found, as well as some topics that are on the webpage that they do not need to bother about as the website is designed to reflect the English curriculum.

4B4 – week ending 24th January

We continued work on Unit 3 – Numeracy, with Speed/Distance/Time work. This is on the MyMaths website under Library –Shape – Measure – Speed and we also looked at Distance/Time Graphs. Library – Algebra – Graphs – Distance-Time Graphs. The class was issued a homework on the MyMaths website (Speed) with a deadline of Thursday 30th January for completion.

We also spent one period doing some work on graphs particularly stem & leaf diagrams and this can be found at Library – Data – Processing Data – Stem & Leaf.

The class had a homework due on Monday 20th January on the Mymaths website (Ratio Dividing 2) which the majority of the class completed very well (although a few did not do so well even though everyone has been told they should be getting 75% or above when tackling homeworks on the Mymaths website as there are lessons linked with each homework that give examples of how to do the homework and the pupils get instantaneous feedback of how they have done). However there were quite a few individuals who did not do it despite daily reminders and a week in which to do it.

The class were directed to the SQA website www.sqasolar.org.uk which has online practice assessments for a number of courses, including National 4 – Numeracy. The class were encouraged to practice some of these by following the links to Open Assess, selecting the subject (Mathematics: Nat 4) followed by the assessment (Numeracy) and then creating the assessment followed by launching the assessment. The likelihood is that all pupils sitting National 4 will be enrolled for this, and will then sit their assessment online. So the more practice an individual has now, the better prepared they will be for the assessment.

3A6 – week ending 24th January

This week we followed on from Number Patterns looking at the graphs that the formulae for these would create. This led onto the topic Straight Line which involved the pupils drawing the straight line generated by a particular equation and being able to recognise the features of an equation and how it relates to the straight line graph. This work can be found on the MyMaths website under Library – Algebra – Graphs – Gradients and also y=mx+c.

2B1 – week ending 24th January

We went on to the topic Speed/Distance/Time in particular using the appropriate formula for calculating these. This is on the MyMaths website under Library – Shape – Measure – Speed, and we also looked at Distance/Time Graphs. Library – Algebra – Graphs – Distance-Time Graphs. The pupils were once again asked to learn/revise how to convert common fractions into decimal form and how these relate to converting time from hours into minutes in order to perform various calculations. The class was issued a homework on the MyMaths website (Speed) with a deadline of Friday 31st January for completion.
